Begin the Journey To Virtualization

Let EDS Enhance Your Virtualization Road Map

Virtualization is a road trip, with many potential side stops along the way. It can enhance an organization's operational model by saving physical space, energy and money. Virtualization can also improve operational performance, ensure business continuity and allow organizations to do more with less. EDS, an HP company, is at the forefront of developing and executing that journey for its clients.

In the Top 8 Reasons to Virtualize, EDS explains why an organization should consider virtualization, but we do more than just talk about virtualization. We help clients – through service-oriented architecture and virtualization of servers, applications, networks and storage – create a flexible road map that identifies individual solutions that align to an overall virtualization program.

Here are just a few ways EDS is helping clients achieve virtualization:

Reducing Carbon Emissions

Energy-hungry IT systems produce about the same amount of gases as the aviation industry. These gases, which contribute to global warming, along with inefficient legacy systems, such as outdated data centers, pose environmental challenges for organizations. EDS helps clients meet these challenges through modernizing and consolidating legacy systems, optimizing technology, automating and standardizing processes, and providing virtualized server solutions.

Canadian Energy Provider Improves Services

SaskPower, who provides electricity to nearly half a million Saskatchewan customer accounts, faced ongoing challenges from an aging infrastructure, greenhouse gas emissions and regulatory issues. As one of SaskPower's IT service providers, EDS helps hold down maintenance and support cost while maximizing SaskPower's technology investment.

EDS helped SaskPower implement several customer service initiatives, including building and maintaining the EnergyCheck audit application, which allowed customers to save money on their energy bills. The added bonus – positive affects on environment via reduced energy consumption.

EDS was a critical partner in helping SaskPower's Corporate Information and Technology team develop virtualization strategies to respond to the changing energy marketplace. We have successfully exceeded SaskPower's service level targets for more than five years running.

Virtualization Allows For Better Performance

In the past, backup servers were expensive but necessary. With virtual servers, images can share backup boxes. If the hardware fails, virtual images can be provisioned automatically to another box. In the event of a disaster, work can be moved easily to an unaffected area. EDS' security management, disaster recovery services and hardened data centers secure your data and maintain business continuity.

Federal Civilian Agency Unlocks Capacity

Determined to enhance its standing on the President's Management Agenda and improve service to citizens, this federal civilian agency looked to EDS to outsource and modernize its data center, help desk and disaster recovery capabilities. This agency relies on a large number of applications and systems to successfully support community development on a national scale. Yet over time, these systems had grown complex and operated on outdated mainframes that vendors no longer support.

EDS designed and implemented a streamlined, virtual environment through server virtualization, which unlocked capacity and improved system redundancy. We also implemented a robust disaster recovery solution that was put to the test when Hurricane Katrina wiped out one of the agency's offices in 2005. With less than 24-hour notice, EDS began provisioning wireless connectivity to the agency's disaster relief teams.

The agency attained the coveted Green rating on the President's Management Agenda in record time and now has an agile, flexible and scalable IT environment.

Lower Total Cost of Ownership With Virtualization

CIOs are under pressure to cut cost and achieve greater return on investment. In an age when technology should be flexible and scalable, organizations are being held back by IT constraints. EDS can reduce your operational cost with technologies such as server virtualization. We'll examine your current model to determine which servers can be consolidated or how many of them can be eliminated.

Government Department Implements Virtual IT Environment

This European government department provides modern, customer-focused welfare services. The department relies on a vast and complex mix of legacy and new IT systems. They needed to strategically align their technology environment with their goals and customer needs, while improving customer service, reducing IT costs and enhancing performance.

EDS implemented and provides ongoing support for the virtual IT environment across the department's infrastructure. Servers and mainframes from three data centers were consolidated to two facilities with three print centers reduced to two.

We helped realign a complex IT architecture into a best-in-class modernized service tower-based infrastructure – improving productivity, enhancing performance and generating substantial savings.
