EDS Helps UK Government Tackle Shortage of Teachers

13 Aug 2008

EDS has joined 60 organisations in supporting the UK Government's “Transition to Teaching” programme. Developed by employers and funded by the government's Training and Development Agency (TDA), the programme helps to address the long-standing shortage of teachers in maths, science and information and communications technology (ICT) by encouraging people with relevant degrees to consider becoming teachers.

“Teaching is not for everyone – it takes a special set of skills and aptitude,” said Kevin Jones, EDS vice president and account executive for the UK Department for Work and Pensions account. “Making a career change like this is a very big decision. EDS in the UK will look to help selected applicants who would like to consider this as their next career move.”

“As a country and as an employer, we have seen shortages of people with IT skills,” Jones added, “and part of the problem is that these are the critical areas where schools are having most difficulty in recruiting key subject teachers. Transition to Teaching promises to be a long-term solution to the problems we face and I am proud that EDS UK is one of the first supporters.”

EDS is encouraging its employees in the UK to apply for the programme.

For more information about the overall programme and how to become a teacher, visit the Training and Development Agency for Schools' Web site, or call the Transition to Teaching helpline at 0845 6026 880.
