Provincial Learning Network (PLNet)

British Columbia Provided Internet Access to Schools and Institutions

Provincial Learning Network (PLNet) Case Study

To guarantee Internet access for all of British Columbia's students, the Ministry of Education launched an ambitious initiative: the Provincial Learning Network (PLNet). This robust, integrated communications structure connects more than 2,000 schools and community colleges throughout the province, providing enhanced learning, communication and collaboration opportunities for students from the kindergarten to the community-college level. In partnership with the Ministry, EDS handles comprehensive help-desk and networking-monitoring services for PLNet, as well as ongoing technical, business-planning, and customer-service support. PLNet will eventually provide increased learning and training opportunities for adult students and professional development for teachers. Most importantly, PLNet ensures all citizens have access to the same educational opportunities by increasing connectivity and reducing the high cost of telecommunications services in remote and rural areas.
