Defense
United Kingdom Ministry of Defence
To enhance the efficiency, speed and accuracy of planning air missions, the Ministry of Defence looked to information technology (IT) partner EDS. EDS developed a family of mission-planning systems that now supports almost all aircraft types in the Royal Air Force fleet.
The Challenge of Transforming To Net-centric Environments
Today's defense departments face a set of unique challenges. They demand greater network-enabled warfighting capability and modernization of their supporting functions. Specifically, they have to find ways to:
- Deliver greater military capabilities at lower costs
- Communicate quickly and securely with collaborating nations and other government and nongovernment organizations to empower real-time decision making
- Respond quickly to unpredictable threats and humanitarian crises
- Improve efficiencies in procurement, medical, personnel and logistics
Achieving these and other objectives requires more than simply acquiring new information technology (IT). It also requires transforming processes and training people to perform and thrive in this new environment.

EDS works with armed forces around the world to create compelling improvements in capabilities on all fronts, including:
- EDS supports the U.S. Department of the Navy with the first of its kind approach to information services consolidation and technology standardization through the Navy Marine Corps Intranet (NMCI). NMCI is a unified, stable and secure IT platform that advances the Navy's transition to a net-centric environment. NMCI:
- Migrated more than 700,000 users to a standardized infrastructure at more than 620 locations, making it the largest intranet in the world
- Improved the security of the Navy and Marine Corps' networks by establishing consistent enterprisewide information assurance protocols and implementing robust monitoring technologies that have been recognized for their superior performance throughout the industry
- Thwarts and blocks 1,200 intrusion attempts each month, as well as 9 million spam e-mail messages per month, and has detected and cleansed an average of 60 viruses, many previously unknown
- Established metrics-driven IT performance management to enable the Navy and Marine Corps to accurately plan for IT needs based on real benchmarks on their network, hardware and help-desk services performance
- Upgraded 111,000 desktop personal computers (PCs) and laptops for NMCI end users in 2007 in what was the largest technical refresh the industry had ever seen
- EDS is helping the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) manage its Defence Information Infrastructure (DII), the largest information infrastructure project ever undertaken in Europe, and one of the largest in the world.
